Full Moon Ritual To Gaia

High Priestess Tehilah Firewind

10 May 2017

The full moon this month is in Virgo, and this is the first full moon of Beltaine. Gaia is a good fit for this time of year, as the transition from maiden to motherhood which Gaia represents is currently taking place in nature. Gaia was originally a virgin mother, who then by her sons gave birth to all the gods. In honor of her independent splendor, only Gaia will be invoked in this ritual. Likewise, Gaia represents simplicity in divinity, the source of all magic, so this ritual is therefore tool-less, instead relying on the use of gesture, dance, and song alone to generate power.

  1. Cast Circle
    1. Dance in a big circle in a big grassy field, three times around, clockwise
    2. While dancing, play or sing the tune “Witch’s Rune” by S.J. Tucker
    3. Visualization of energies:
      1. On the first pass, imagine a soft white fog in your wake, sealing out the outside world. No longer do the affairs of those around you matter; no longer can you feel their gave
      2. On the second pass, visualize purple energy being generated in your wake by your dance moves; allow yourself to become more energized with each step
      3. Finally, imagine as you pass each directional marker (N, E, S, W) energy of that color pouring into the circle (green, yellow, red, and blue respectively)
      4. In the end, you should be seeing a rainbow filled purple circle, which shines silver in the night
  2. Invoke Deity
    1. Assume the goddess pose and say firmly and loudly: “Gaia, great mother, I invite thee attend this ritual in your honor. By the blessed light of moon, oh mother, I invoke thee. Attend!”
    2. If you so wish, say a prayer for the dead or invoke the spirits of Light and Shadow
      1. Sing “Sacred Ancestors” by Lisa Thiel quietly and reverently to invite the spirits of the departed to attend
      2. For the spirits of Light and Shadow, do a Sun Salutation slowly, only moving while exhaling, and feeling the energy of life and death as it impacts your body; feel the strength and vitality of the stretch, hear the creaks and aches of deterioration, and cherish the dance of both forces within your physical form
  3. State Ritual Purpose
    1. In a loud firm voice, state “Gaia, mother of all things, goddess of earth and sky, I honor thee this night. Bless me with your light, with stability and wisdom, with patience and love. So mote it be!”
    2. Meditate on the splendor of the earth, the way the moonbeams fall upon the landscape, feel the grass and dirt beneath your bare feet, and be grounded
  4. Do spellwork
    1. Use bubble casting to generate intent for some purpose in your life
    2. Enchant and empower incense by chanting the intention for it while walking in a circle about it, getting faster and faster as the chant becomes more intense
  5. Draw Down Gaia
    1. Stand in goddess position, and begin to rock back and forth slightly in time, as it feels right
    2. When you are ready, say the following in a loud, clear, firm voice: “Gaia, greatest of mothers, weaver of fates, designer of the mighty heavens, creator of the nourishing earth, come forth! I call unto thee this night, by the light of the full moon, that the virgin mother come forth and enter into my flesh, that she may give sight to the blind, that she may give wisdom to the foolish. I call unto thee! Come forth, Gaia! Great mother, come forth!”
    3. Feel out for the feminine, the goddess energy, repeating “Come forth, Gaia!” as much as feels necessary, as a chant or a hum, as preferred
    4. If you are able and Gaia so wills it, she will come. Take the time to feel one with her, with the earth and heavens, and the moon above.
    5. When you grow tired, bid her farewell. Stop rocking if you hadn’t already, and let your awareness return to yours alone.
  6. Ground and Center
    1. Stand in earth position, feet shoulder width apart, and hands parallel to the ground with palms facing downward. Take a few deep breaths, feeling rooted to the earth as a tree would be.
  7. Close circle
    1. Sing the chant “the earth, the air, the fire, the water, return” while visualizing the colored energy of the elements swirling about you
    2. Let this feeling build, and mix with any energy raised from the spellwork prior
    3. Finally, let all of the energy dissipate out into the universe like a bubble popping
    4. Then it is done. So mote it be.
