Full Moon Ritual To Thoth

High Priestess Tehilah Firewind and Kody Snyder

9 June 2017

This full moon occurs in the constellation Sagittarius. Therefore, this ritual should occur at 11 pm, when the moon is high in the sky, as Sagittarius represents the coming midnight, the twilight of the evening. Sagittarius is a sign meant for aiding in expanding experiences, and on this particular day, Saturn is also in Sagittarius. This is why Thoth will be honored and invoked, Thoth being the god of rationale, judgement, fairness, and time.

On the altar, there should be a white candle to symbolize the moon and to represent Thoth (who is commonly associated with the color white; leave this unlit until later). There should also be an hourglass, watch, or some measure of time-keeping prominently featured on the altar. This also works well given the placement of Saturn near the moon since Saturn is also representative of time and order, and Thoth was believed to have taught man to measure time by the light of the moon. Also on the altar should be feathers of various forms since Thoth has the head of an ibis, an Egyptian bird. Incense of Myrrh and white flowers should be prepared to be burnt during the ritual, and this should also prominently be placed on the altar, as Thoth associates with the element of air.

Performing a magical working is REQUIRED in this ritual because Thoth was also seen as the great magician, who brought magic to mankind. It would almost be offensive not to perform some kind of spellwork once he is invoked.

For an offering, be sure to have some chai tea, brewed and hot, and any kind of bread.

  1. Casting the Circle
    1. Walk deosil as you do these three laps (clockwise)
    2. Take consecrated salt, add it to consecrated water, and sprinkle it around the edges of the circle. As you walk, softly chant “by earth and water, I consecrate this space
    3. Light the incense in the censer and traverse the edges of the circle. This time as you walk, softly chant “by air and fire, I consecrate this space
    4. Take the athame, and point it at the ground. As you walk about the circle edge, envision a purple, whispy light extending from your mind, through the athame into the air. Chant softly “by this blade, be conjured, oh circle of power! I consecrate thee, oh circle of power
    5. Once you reach back where you started this third time, loudly and confidently state: “by thrice traversed, this circle be cast!
  2. Invocation of Thoth
    1. Light the white candle
    2. Loudly and confidently, state the following (in Egyptian or in English; if stated in English, replace SN with your second religious name and FN with your first religious name; mundane names can be used if religious names are unknown):

      1. T’et an Ausar Ani, Ausar ayn Ani, anet khra-k ka Amentet, an Tekhuti suten khekh am-a!
Saith SN FN, SN, the scribe FN: Homage to thee, bull of Amentet, behold Thoth, the king of eternity is with me!

      2. [Draw Thoth Symbol thoth hieroglyph ]

      3. Nuk neter ay-ay-a enma tsepet.
I am the great god in the boat.

      4. Aybai-na kher-k.
        I have fought for thee.

      5. Nuk u-ay em ennu en enen neteru t’ta-at sema-ay-kkheru Ausar er kkhefta-f hru pui en ut-ayts t’etset.
I am one of those gods, the divine chiefs who make Osiris victorious over his enemies on that day, the weighing of the words (here Thoth is speaking, and is referring to the day he spoke and existence came to be).

      6. [Phrasing taken from Plate V of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, The Papyrus of Ani]
  3. Spellwork
    1. Any kind of spell will do
    2. Be sure to have a candle on hand, and a chant prepared in advance
  4. Honor Thoth
    1. Lay out the offering of bread on a nice silver platter (or any kind if silver is not owned) and place it before the candle on the altar
    2. Take the tea, and consecrate it with the athame
    3. Pour some tea over the bread and state loudly and confidently: “To Thoth, great god of wisdom and reason, I offer this freely! Grant me great magical ability, that I may see your wisdom in all the world! So mote it be!
    4. Next, say the following in honor of Thoth: “Thoth, lord of writing, master of papyrus, maker of the palette and the ink-jar, be blessed on this night, mighty speaker, sweet-tongued measurer of time and value! Blessed be!
    5. Next, focus your thoughts on boldness, on seeking the greater good at any cost, and the myth that involves Thoth betting against the moon to aid Nut in his desire for children and fertility
      1. The myth goes that Thoth bet against the moon, called Iabet, for 5 days of her light and won
      2. This allowed Nut and Geb to bear Ausar (Osiris), Auset (Isis), Nebt-Het (Nephsys), and Set (Seth), as Nut was only fertile at this time
      3. This is a nice analog to how the light of the full moon is that which represents fertility, creativity, and spiritual growth
    6. As you focus on this myth, chant the names of Thoth: “A’an, Jehuti, Astenu, Tekhuti
    7. Let this chant build until you feel it is right, getting louder and more focused as you go
    8. When the chant climaxes and wanes, pause for a moment, and then say the following: “Thoth, consort of Ma’an, lover of unbias, divine law-maker, and judge of the gods, hear me this night! A’an, Tehkuti, scribe of the underworld, Jehuti, Astenu, he who balances order and chaos in this world and beyond, hear me this night! Thoth, mighty god of reason and measure, he who always speaks the words that fulfill the wishes of Ra, be blessed on this night! So mote it be!
  5. Ground and Center, and Close Circle
    1. Sit for a few moments in the light of the moon and feel the magic and divinity in this space that you have made
    2. Feel the energy dissipate from you as you walk, allowing the light from the circle to fade
    3. When you feel ready, stand and walk about the circle thrice widdershins (counter-clockwise)
    4. Once all has faded, say “the ritual is done, the circle is closed, go in peace and merry part! Blessed be!
